General Hospital Adds Four One Life to Live Actors/Characters

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, Michael Easton, Kristen Alderson, Kassie DePaiva and Roger Howarth will all be joining the cast of General Hospital, and they will all be playing their characters from One Life To Live.

The series finale of One Life To Live airs on ABC this Friday. Easton, Alderson, DePaiva and Howarth are currently set to start filming for General Hospital this month.

SID hears that Michael Easton (aka OLTL‘s John McBain) is set to join GH as well.

King, of course, previously played two Alcazar brothers, Luis and Lorenzo, on GH — both now dead — but it’s not clear if he would play yet another member of the international crime family or a brand-new character.

Easton has never appeared on GH proper, but did play vampire Caleb on the ABC sudser’s spin-off, Port Charles, where he was paired with Kelly Monaco’s Livvie. (Monaco now plays GH‘s Sam.) SID hears from at least one source that Easton will likely bring his OLTL crime-solver to Port Charles.

Both King and Easton had signed on to be a part of OLTL‘s online continuation, but Prospect Park pulled the plug on that venture in late November. Thus, OLTL‘s final episode will air Friday, Jan. 13 on ABC.

General Hospital Shake-Up! Jill Farren Phelps Out as Show Boss, OLTL's Frank Valentini In-TVLine

Christmas came early for some General Hospital fans late Wednesday night, when Soaps In Depth broke the news via Twitter that Jill Farren Phelps is on her way out as executive producer of what soon will be ABC’s lone daytime sudser.

Taking over the reins at GH will be Frank Valentini, who had been with One Life to Live since 1985 and served as EP there since 2003. The well-regarded show boss became a free agent last Friday when Prospect Park formally abandoned its plan to keep the Llanviewers alive via an online video hub. OLTL airs its series finale on Friday, Jan. 13; the lifestyle show The Revolution seizes the soap’s time slot the following Monday.

One source tells In Depth that Phelps’ pact with the soap was up in mid-December, and that the cast would be getting word of the switcheroo on Thursday morning.

JFP, who had helmed GH for a decade, had come under fire as of late in the wake of 1) wilting ratings that threaten to make GH extra-dispensable to ABC affiliates when Katie Couric’s daytime talker debuts next September, and 2) the announced exit of Emmy-winning fan fave Jonathan Jackson, who in leaving cited several requests of TPTB that fell on deaf ears. Similarly, another Emmy-winning GH vet, Kimberly MCullough, recently announced her plan to vacate the role of Robin, so that she may pursue a career in directing.

All My Children and One Life To Live online move officially canceled-From Inside the Box-Zap2it

Canceled soaps "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" have officially gotten the axe -- again.

Prospect Park, the company that promised to start an online network to re-launch the beloved soaps online, announced today that it has run into so many hurdles in trying to negotiate contracts for the soaps' new leases on life that it will be impossible to continue.

Rich Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park issued a joint statement with the news, saying, "After five months of negotiations with various guilds, hundreds of presentations to potential financial and technology partners, and a hope that we could pioneer a new network for the future, it is with great disappointment that we are suspending our aspirations to revive 'One Life to Live' and 'All My Children' via online distribution."

Although the two had high hopes for launching a new network online, there just wasn't enough time to establish a new type of business model for the shows. "It is now becoming clear that mounting issues make our ability to meet our deadlines to get 'OLTL' on the air in a reasonable time period following its January 13, 2012 ABC finale impossible," say Frank and Kwatinetz. "We always knew it would be an uphill battle to create something historical, and unfortunately we couldn't ultimately secure the backing and clear all the hurdles in time. We believe we exhausted all reasonable options apparent to us, but despite enormous personal, as well as financial cost to ourselves, we failed to find a solution."

Prospect Park admits it was ultimately contractual issues that caused the trouble, saying, "While we narrowed in on a financial infrastructure, the contractual demands of the guilds, which regulate our industry, coupled with the program's inherent economic challenges ultimately led to this final decision. In the end, the constraints of the current marketplace, including the evolution and impact of new media on our industry simply proved too great a match for even our passion.

Earlier in November, reports surfaced that "AMC" wouldn't return until much later in 2012 due to contract disputes, but Prospect Park was still working to bring the show online.

For the record, "OLTL" stars Erika Slezak, Michael Easton, Ted King, Kassie DePaiva and Sean Ringgold had all signed on to stay, while the only "AMC" actors officially on board were Cameron Mathison and Lindsey Hartley.

"AMC" ended its historical run in September, while "OLTL" concludes in January.

EXCLUSIVE: This is potential very bad news for soap fans who feel thankful this Thanksgiving that canceled ABC series One Life To Live and All My Children may continue online. The transfer from broadcast TV to the Web proved far more difficult than anyone anticipated. I hear that Prospect Park self-financed extensive research and its principals held dozens of meetings with potential investors for their Online Network, which was originally slated to launch in the first quarter of 2012. (The latest plan has been for Once Life To Live to go on first, with All My Children put on hold.)


In a sign of potential hurdles, Prospect Park in late July issued a statement that it was “in the process of working out the essential terms of our proposed collective bargaining agreements with the appropriate guilds and unions, which we must do prior to firming up deals with above- and below-the-line talent.” I hear that those negotiations proved difficult, mostly because there is no existing template for a broadcast program transitioning online. Word is that the guilds have been looking to hold OLTL and AMC to broadcast terms, which is somewhat understandable as the Prospect Park-ABC deal calls for the two series to “continue to be delivered with the same quality and in the same format and length.” But shows produced on broadcast terms are impossible to support with online vs. TV advertising. (ABC, which makes extra money on its soaps from off-network sales to SoapNet and foreign territories, claimed it was still losing money on OLTL and AMC, leading to their cancellation.)


To make the target launch date, the soap writers hired by Prospect Park were supposed to start work earlier this month but they haven’t as there is no deal with the WGA. And all pacts with actors from OLTL and AMC that Prospect Park made over the past few months were contingent on clearances by the unions. I hear that Prospect Park principals are still trying to find a last-minute solution to keep the soap online venture going but feel pressed into a corner after exhausting every possible avenue and may decide to pull the plug as soon as today.

Susan Lucci wants fans to know that it’s “simply untrue” that she is one of the reasons why All My Children is not moving forward via Prospect Park’s TheOnlineNetwork.com.

“This is simply untrue and not the case,” the daytime legend said Wednesday in a passionate statement posted to her Facebook page.


Lucci went on to explain that she has “been in discussions [to stay with AMC] since Prospect Park first expressed interest in moving the series online, and [in early September] I made it clear that I would be ecstatic to be a part of All My Children in a prominent way if they committed to producing the series for another year.

“I have not heard back from Prospect Park since then,” she revealed. “In fact, I learned of their decision not to proceed with All My Children at the same time you did, through the media.”

As reported by ABC Soaps In Depth, Prospect Park has indefinitely put on hold plans to relaunch AMC via its new web hub, TheOnlineNetwork.com, which itself is scheduled to (hopefully) go live in early 2012.

As OLTL’s ABC Finale Nears, Kassie DePaiva Has Endgame Wish for Todd/Blair, Laments MIA Max

SID‘s sources say that Prospect Park has decided “they only need one soap opera for their new Internet channel,” and since they’re currently further along in developments for a OLTL reboot — having already signed 13 of that sudser’s cast members, including heavy hitters Erika Slezak (Viki) and Kassie DePaiva (Blair) — AMC has been benched.

Thus far, Cameron Mathison (Ryan) and Lindsay Hartley (Cara) are the only AMC vets signed on to participate in the prospective online continuation of their former ABC serial. And while others are in negotiations, In Depth reports that all such talks have come to a halt.

Once Life to Live Star Kassie BePaiva Discusses the Soap Opera's ABC Finale-TVLine

As One Life to Live enters its final weeks of production of episodes to air on ABC, series vet Kassie DePaiva has a firm opinion on how she’d like Blair’s love life to shape up before the sudser migrates online.

After relating how “so excited” she was when OLTL lured back Roger Howarth — affording her the chance to play out the “RogerTodd” and “TrevorTodd” story with the Daytime Emmy winner and his successor Trevor St. John — DePaiva told reporters at the set on Tuesday, “I think the best is yet to come, but I hope that Blair and Todd end up in each other’s arms for the ending [on ABC].

“That would be closure for the fans,” she explained, “and I think it would be closure for Blair and Todd.”

One possible obstacle to that happy ending: Howarth has not (yet?) inked a deal to be a part of OLTL‘s planned continuation via TheOnlineNetwork.com, as DePaiva and others have. Could the actress be counting on her longtime leading man to sign on the dotted line?

Whereas “the old Blair,” upon being presented with two Todds and the dark-and-handsome Tomas (played by Ted King), “would have completely jumped in the sack with everybody and been like, ‘Let me see which one is the best, who will offer me the most,’ this ‘new and improved’ Blair — this seasoned Blair — has started to smarten up when it comes to the men and the priorities in her life.

“That being said,” she continued, “there is an undeniable chemistry between Todd and Blair that will not go away, and history is there to prove it.” And what better irony than to have Llanview’s most Sturm und Drang couple wind up the happiest? DePaiva concurred, effusing in her native Southern twang, “Wouldn’t that be suh-weet?!”

Turning to one of the other (of many) men from Blair’s past, DePaiva also shared her disappointment that while OLTL in its final weeks on ABC will trot out familiar faces such as Erin Torpey (ex-Jessica), Catherine Hickland (Lindsay), Fiona Hutchison (Gabrielle) and Roscoe Born (Mitch), her real-life husband did not make the cut.

“I’m really shocked that they didn’t bring Max back,” she said, barely holding back tears during what was already an emotional day of interviews. “Jim DePaiva made a huge contribution to the show, and I don’t know if it was intentional, the snubbing… but it doesn’t take [his contributions] away. Women of my generation still think he’s hot, and I’m married to him so I’m the luckiest one here!”

Online Hub for All My Children, One Life to Live Gets Name

Prospect Park, the media firm that is taking over production of OLTL as well as All My Children, with a plan to deliver new episodes via The Online Network (launching in January), announced on Friday that pending a final agreement with AFTRA, deals are now in place for cast members Melissa Archer (Natalie), Kelley Missal (Danielle), Sean Ringgold (Shaun), Andrew Trischitta (Jack) and Jerry VerDorn (Clint) to stay on with the show. They join previously announced castmates Ted King (Tomas), Michael Easton (John), Kassie DePaiva (Blair) and Erika Slezak (Viki).

I’ll pause here to come out and say it: Jolie is endgame, people!

Prospect Park also has retained the services of Emmy-winning One Life headwriter and consulting producer Ron Carlivati, subject to a WGA agreement. Carlivati has been with the sudser since 1996, and a headwriter since 2007. On the creative side, he joins executive producer Frank Valentini for OLTL‘s TOLN incarnation.

Prospect Park's Online Hub for All My Children and One Life to Live Gets Name, Launch Date-TVLine

The Prospect Park media company on Tuesday announced a name and tentative launch date for the online network that will host new epsiodes of ABC’s axed All My Children and One Life to Live.


The Online Network (aka TOLN), as it will be called, is expected to launch in January 2012 — just as OLTL airs its final ABC episode — “with the goal of eventually providing viewers with a full programming selection of first-run, long form content on an anytime, anywhere basis,” says the press release. The URL is TheOnlineNetwork.com/TOLN.com.

“We are creating TOLN to conveniently deliver fans of quality television long-form programming anytime and anywhere,” said Prospect Park founders Rich Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz in a statement. “With broadband availability in 70% of US households and the proliferation of internet enabled televisions, DVRs and wireless devices, ultimately we believe that online distribution provides the best platform to access 30 and 60 minute entertainment content. The viewer response to the shows we have licensed has been tremendous, and we have much more in development to appeal to a broad audience base.”

While Prospect Park has yet to publicly comment on the possibility of this being a subscription-based service, sources tell TVLine that at launch time TOLN will be strictly ad-supported, like most online hubs.

One Life thus far has signed four stars — Emmy winner Erika Slezak (Viki) included — to be a part of the online venture, while AMC to date has inked deals with Cameron Mathison (Ryan) and Lindsey Hartley (Cara), but not Susan Lucci (Erica).

• V alum Morris Chesnut has booked a major arc on FX’s upcoming drama American Horror Story, per Variety. Little is known about the character other than that his name is Luke. The spooky show premieres Oct. 5.

• Looks like One Life to Live‘s Josh Kelly may not be moving to the web with the ABC soap. The actor has been cast as a lead in MTV’s pilot Dumb Girls, per Deadline. The comedy, from Awkward showrunner Lauren Iungerich, has also tapped Christine Evangelista (The Joneses) and Nico Evers Swindell (William & Kate) to co-star.

Prospect Park announced on Tuesday the first wave of One Life to Live cast members who have signed to stick with the sudser when it moves to the Internet in January, and the names attached do not disappoint. Among those joining the pioneer online production are daytime vets Michael Easton (aka John McBain), Kassie DePaiva (Blair), Ted King (Tomas), and the aforementioned Slezak.

Given the confirmation of such strong OLTL players staying on-board the soap, it bodes well that other fan faves will soon follow suit.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for All My Children. According to our sister site Deadline, Susan Lucci has declined Prospect Park’s offer to continue with the show. Though she was reportedly offered a salary identical to the one she drew at ABC, it is said that Lucci requested fewer hours and a deal for a primetime series — demands that Prospect wouldn’t/couldn’t meet.

Lucci’s reversal comes on the heels of the daytime icon lashing out at ABC soaps boss Brian Frons for a pattern of decision making that all but sealed AMC‘s fate.
