Up All Night: Scoop on season 2 from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos

Here's some scoop on Up All Night from Kristin Dos Santos' Spoiler Chat Daily for Wednesday 9/12/12.

Stella: Any scoop on Up All Night? I think it's so underrated and I'm obsessed with Christina Applegate!
You'd be hard pressed to find someone who wasn't obsessed with Christina Applegate. We were recently on the set of Up All Night, and Christina talked to us about the show having a different feel in season two. "We're unemployed. It doesn't change the dynamic so much because I think that the Ava show was kind of a different show and I think the stuff that really worked was when we were in our relationships," Applegate tells us. "You guys get to see the people as the people and not have this workplace taking us away from that. That is really what is happening."

Ausiello: Reagan is about to find out that if there’s one thing harder than having a kid, it’s being a grownup. In an upcoming episode, her ill-fated attempt to impress a twentysomething hipster gets her smacked with the dreaded “m” word: ma’am!

Up All Night: Casts Sean Hayes in Season 2-TVLine

According to TVLine's Kimberly Roots, Sean Hayes has been cast in a recurring guest-star role for season 2 of Up All Night. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Hayes' role:

Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes will join the NBC sitcom’s upcoming second season as an accompanist who worked with Maya Rudolph’s Ava during her music recording days, TVGuide.com reports. His multi-episode arc will have him palling around with the audacious Ava front woman, whose show-within-a-show we’ll see far less of (according to The Huffington Post) as the comedy moves toward telling more stories about Reagan, Chris and Amy at home.

Hayes’ casting news follows word that Best Friends Forever’s Luka Jones is now an Up All Night series regular who’ll play the divorced younger brother of Christina Applegate’s Reagan.

Here's some scoop on Up All Night from this week's (Posted on 4/17/12) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Do you think Amy Poehler would ever guest-star on Up All Night? [Her husband] Will Arnett appeared on Parks and Recreation, so it seems only fair! —Julie
Ausiello:
It actually almost happened. “We tried it one time and there was a scheduling issue,” reveals exec producer Emily Spivey, who admits to having some reservations about the casting stunt. “I would work with Amy no matter what and would be thrilled to have her, [but] there’s something about it that feels like we [should] keep [the two shows] separate, you know?”

Carla, in Miami: Up All Night makes me happy. Please make me happy.
Well, here's a little jolt of happy for ya! We told you waaaay back in November that the oh-so-lazy Megan Mullally would be coming to to guest star and in the second to last episode of the season, she'll arrive with a bang! Mullally plays Shanya, a rival talk-show host who once was Ava's protégé. We'll be seeing these queens of comedy at an over-the-top crazy party surrounded by "silver-fox" Asian men wearing nothing but some very fancy boxers. Ooh la la! Oh and these fellas will also be singing along to Lady Gaga's hit song "Poker Face." If this scene doesn't get your body tingling in all the right places, then you're in desperate need of a check-up.

But it's like, whatever they want for their show. They have a lot of characters to write for." Well, they can always make room for Crazy Nancy, right?

Up All Night: Scoop from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Up All Night from this week's (Posted on 1/31/12) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Any idea how long Jason Lee is going to stick around on Up All Night? I love having him on my television again. —Tabitha
Ausiello: I imagine producers will want to keep him around at least long enough to meet Ava’s (Maya Rudolph) lovable, fun father, who will be introduced in a spring episode. Pops apparently has a new young family, including a wife who’s the same age (if not younger) than Ava.

Ryan Kwanten to Guest Star on New Girl, Dean Winters Cast in Season 1 Episode of Up All Night-TVLine

A Bon Temps babe will be New Girl Jess’ Valentine.

True Blood star Ryan Kwanten is set to drunkenly woo Zooey Deschanel’s character on the Valentine’s Day-themed installment of Fox’s hit freshman comedy. According to E! Online, Kwanten is filling the role TVLine told you about last week: Oliver, a potential one-night stand whom Jess meets at a bar on the romance-centric holiday. Thing is, Jess’ new guy is as dull as his abs are defined.

Ready for more of today’s TV dish? Well…

• Perfect casting alert! Dean Winters — who in recent years has shined as Dennis, the deadbeat ex of 30 Rock‘s Liz Lemon — will play Will Arnett’s über-competitive brother on NBC’s Up All Night, per TV Guide Magazine.

• Showtime has ordered a second season of Lisa Kudrow’s half-hour comedy Web Therapy. The upcoming run — which set to debut in 2012 — will be made up of at least 10 episodes and feature guest appearances by Conan O’Brien, Minnie Driver, Rosie O’Donnell, Molly Shannon, Selma Blair and Oscar winner Meryl Streep.

• VH1′s Single Ladies has officially replaced the departing Stacey Dash with All My Children alumna Denise Vasi. Season 2 of the primetime soap is set to bow next summer.

• Is everyone ready for a little Jersey Shore Shark Attack? EW.com has gotten their hands on the cast list for Syfy’s upcoming original movie (to air next summer), and it includes Tony Sirico (The Sopranos), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Jack Scalia (All My Children), Joey Fatone (‘N Sync), William Atherton (Die Hard) and, of course, actual Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino.

• CBS is revamping the names of two of its upcoming series: ¡Rob!, the Rob Schneider family comedy, will now be (less excitedly) known as Rob, and the midseason cop drama The 2-2 is now NYC 22.

Up All Night gets two more episodes from NBC-From Inside the Box-Zap2it

up-all-night-week-off.jpg"Up All Night" has already been picked up for a full season on NBC. Now that season is getting longer.

The network has asked for two more episodes of the show, which stars Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph. That brings its total for the season from 22 to 24.

"Up All Night" is moving to Thursdays after "The Office" in January, and the additional episodes will add to the number of originals available in the higher-profile timeslot. It's also another vote of confidence for the show, which has been among the few semi-bright spots for NBC so far this season.

Although its ratings are hardly world-beating -- it's averaging 6.24 million viewers and a 2.6 rating among adults 18-49 -- the show has improved on NBC's season-ago numbers in its current timeslot (8 p.m. ET Wednesdays). The series it's swapping time periods with, "Whitney," draws 5.53 million viewers and a 2.7 in the 18-49 demographic.

Wednesday's (Nov. 23) "Up All Night," meanwhile, features a second appearance by guest star Jason Lee as Ava's (Rudolph) new boyfriend, Kevin. In the clip below, he and Chris (Arnett) discuss the relationship -- and why it's important to keep the baby wipes box closed.

Molly Shannon to Guest Star on Up All Night Season 1-TVLine

Up All Night is staging a Saturday Night Live reunion this fall between funny ladies Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon.

Shannon is set to bring the laughs on a November episode of the freshman NBC comedy, playing an “incompetent associate producer” on Ava, the talk show hosted by Rudolph’s Oprah-like character. (SNL vet Will Forte guest-starred on Up All Night earlier this season, yet sadly didn’t interact onscreen with his former castmate.)

TV Guide Magazine first reported this casting news.

This isn’t the first time Rudolph and Shannon have collaborated post-SNL. Rudolph dropped by Shannon’s short-lived Kath & Kim sitcom back in 2008. (Here, the two enjoy a mutual lovefest.)

Shannon — who most recently filled a vacant seat over on CBS’ The Talk — enjoyed a brief stint on Glee last season, playing Sue Sylvester’s nemesis.

Jason Lee on My Name Is Earl Movie: "It's Time!"-E! Online

Jason Lee, My Name is Earl

Jason Lee isn't just romancing Maya Rudolph on NBC's Up All Night these days. He's ready to get down to business and finish that dang list Earl Hickey started so many years ago!

We hit the set of Up All Night to get scoop on what's ahead from Will Arnett, Christina Applegate and Jason (more on that later), and Jason revealed that he's been talking with My Name Is Earl boss Greg Garcia about a movie (big or teeny-tiny screen) wrapping up the story...

MORE: Watch Now: First Look at J.J. Abrams' New Series Alcatraz

"I definitely see it happening," Jason told us of an Earl finale feature. "It's time! We have to finish the list which we never got to do, so it's sort of just floating out there in limbo somewhere incomplete."

My Name Is Earl (also starring Jaime Pressly) was canceled after four seasons on NBC, and the final episode last May ended with "To Be Continued..."

Jason says Earl's boss Greg Garcia (who now runs Fox's Raising Hope) is on board with making a wrap-up feature happen. "I've talked to Greg and even if we have to get a small guerrilla crew together and kind of make our own thing and put it on the internet, we definitely want a closing. Whatever we can do to sort of finish the list, I feel it in the air, it's time. A movie? Fantastic."

On Up All Night, Jason cozies up to Maya's character Ava, and Christina tells us Jason is "incomparable" and the perfect man for Ava: "He is rugged and grounded and kind and I think he is going to be able to spar with her really well."

Up All Night airs Wednesdays on NBC.

Fall TV: NBC Grants Full-Season Orders to Up All Night and Whitney-TVLine

Following in the footsteps of Fox, which last week demonstrated its love for the New Girl, NBC on Tuesday morning became the second network to pull the trigger on a full-season order. In fact, the Peacock unleashed a pair of ‘em, granting pick-ups to the freshman comediesUp All Night, starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett, and Whitney, which is fronted by stand-up comedienne-turned-sitcom queen Whitney Cummings.

“We made comedy an important goal for us this season and I’m very pleased to be making full-season commitments to both Whitney and Up All Night,” NBC entertainment chair Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. “We’re thrilled with the creative direction of both shows as well as the potential for them to continue to build loyal audiences over the coming months. We’re proud of all of the producers, writers, actors, and directors who have worked so hard to bring these shows to life.”

At last tally, Up All Night had settled in at 5.34 million viewers and a 2.1 demo rating in its Wednesday lead-off spot, while Whitney (with 5.37 mil/2.5) dropped 21 and 24 percent, respectively, in its plum aprés-Office berth.

Shortly after the pick-up news was announced, TVLine learned that on the flip side of things, NBC has cancelled The Playboy Club.

Walking Dead Debuts Webisodes, Terry O'Quinn Extends Hawaii Five-o Visit, and More-TVLine

AMC is launching a six-episode Walking Dead web series which will explore the backstory of zombiette Hannah, the infamous “bicycle girl” offed by Rick (Andrew Lincoln) in the gruesome series’ pilot episode. Fans will get to see Hannah before the apocalypse that changed her, as well as witness her ultimate demise.

All six installments debut Monday, Oct. 3 on amctv.com, leading up to the Oct. 16 premiere of The Walking Dead Season 2.

Ready for more of today’s TV dish? Well…

Lost alum Terry O’Quinn, who just last week made his Hawaii Five-0 debut, has thus far extended his run with the CBS drama from six to nine episodes — and maybe “even more,” hopeful EP Peter Lenkov tells TV Guide Magazine.

• Former West Winger Richard Schiff will play dad to working mom Christina Applegate on NBC’s Up All Night, EW.com reports. Schiff’s character is described as a “psychologist who’s expected to be distant, quiet, and always analyzing.” As first reported by Deadline, Blythe Danner (Meet the Parents) will play Reagan’s mom.

Matthew Morrison will make his directorial debut on Episode 8 of Glee‘s third season, per EW.com.

• Grey’s Anatomy vet Kate Burton will portray the Vice President of the United States on Shonda Rhimes’ midseason ABC drama, Scandal.

The Vampire Diaries executive producer Kevin Williamson is channeling his inner Dexter with a new serial killer drama pilot for Fox. Per Deadline, the Scream king’s new project is “an edge-of-the-seat thriller about a diabolical serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers.”

• Precious director Lee Daniels is set to adapt the 1960s classic novel Valley of the Dolls for NBC, per Deadline. Dolls spans two decades of the scandalous lives of three female best friends.

• Lifetime has renewed its over-the-top docu-series Dance Moms for a second season, with the first cycle set to wrap on Oct. 5.

• Season 4 of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta will premiere Sunday, Nov. 6.

Up All Night Scoop: Christina Applegate Gets a Mommy in Blythe Danner-TVLine

Sorry, Peg Bundy — Christina Applegate has a new mom.

Blythe Danner has been cast in the potentially recurring role of first-time mom Reagan’s own mother on NBC’s Up All Night, our sister site Deadline reports.

The freshman comedy series, which stars Applegate and Will Arnett as new parents, debuted Wednesday night to good numbers. It moves to its regular time slot of Wednesdays at 8/7c starting next week.

Danner — real-life mom to Gwyneth Paltrow — won an Emmy for her work on Showtime’s Huff and was one of Peter Facinelli’s original lesbian mommies on the cabler’s Nurse Jackie. She also had a recurring role on NBC’s Will & Grace.

Fall TV Preview: We're Losing Sleep Over How Much We Like Up All Night-E! Online

Up All Night

Dear TV gods, please do not let Will Arnett and Christina Applegate's new NBC comedy Up All Night go the way of their most recent (short-lived) TV projects.
We need this show. We need them on our TV sets. And we're kind of in love with them as parents—or rather, make that endearingly flawed parental train wrecks. Who do karaoke. And drink. And use phrases like "mug of butt."

Dear everyone else: If you don't have an obsession with Arnett or Applegate, and/or you're not a new parent yourself, you may be wondering if this show is for you. Well, here is your answer:

MORE: GET ALL THE FALL TV PREVIEWS WE'VE DONE SO FAR

Yes.

Read on to find out why!

Up All Night
Time-Slot Competition: Survivor (CBS), The X Factor (Fox), The Middle (ABC), H8R (CW)
Cast:
Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, Nick Cannon
Status:
We just watched the new, final version of the pilot with the addition of Cannon

Like the awesomeness that is Raising Hope, Up All Night is a "baby show" in which you rarely see the actual baby. No Olsen-twin type cutesiness here. Just some good solid belly laughs and a few heart-tugging moments courtesy of this new little bundle, including the show's opening scene in which married couple Christopher (Will) and Reagan (Christina) find out they're gonna have a baby and completely freak out. (Then come to terms in a very funny way.)

The story then picks up after the baby (Amy) is born, when Reagan is returning to her job as a daytime talk show producer—Maya Rudolph plays the daytime queen and Nick Cannon her sidekick. (In the original pilot, Maya's and Christina's characters worked at a celebrity publicity firm; the change open ups the workplace storyline, giving it new energy.)

While Will Arnett has already totally nailed the wacky character-actor thing (Arrested Development, 30 Rock, anyone?), even you longtime fans may find his new role on Up All Night refreshing. It's Will's first straight-man gig, and he's a pretty relatable and solid father at that. Even better? His chemistry with Christina Applegate is palpable, and Christina is as charming, self-deprecating and funny as always. The casting could not be better.

And of course, the masterminds behind this series aren't too shabby either: Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels and creator Emily Spivey (Parks and Recreation, SNL). Applegate is also a producer on the show.

"I read the script and I really laughed because it was dangerous," Applegate tells me. "It's about a kid and the parents but it's like, 'Who are these people? They might mess a lot of things up.'"

And Arnett insists this show isn't just for new moms and dads.

"Emily Spivey wrote the show as very real and very accessible," Arnett explains. "If you happen to have young children, you'll relate—but also, it is real legit funny. And it has heart."

Which might explain why even on the third viewing of Up All Night's pilot episode, we can't make it past the final two minutes without choking back tears.

Final Verdict: Will Arnett + Christina Applegate + solid writing + an adorable little baby you can totally ignore if you want to = win.
