Major Crimes: Hold on tight everybody, because this episode is oozing with family drama (My thoughts on episode 3x11 “Down the Drain”)

Right off the bat, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and I’ve really missed Major Crimes since its last episode (Zoo Story) aired back in August. As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to crime shows, it’s very important that the cases of the week be interesting and engaging, otherwise the show definitely suffers as a whole. Admittedly, I didn’t like the episode “Zoo Story” all that much as a whole because I thought that the case they were working on that episode was kind of boring, but I loved the subplot with Rusty’s mom being in jail and wanting Rusty’s help to get out of jail. While I found that episode rather disappointing for the most part, the last scene of the episode where Raydor visits Rusty’s mom in prison and tells her about the “deal” that she had arranged for her was truly awesome. I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched that scene at this point. Fortunately, when it comes to this episode, I found the case of the week very interesting. I thought it was full of twists and turns, and it definitely had some genuinely sad elements to it as well.

The team found a dead woman’s body in the sewer at the beginning of the episode, and after Dr. Morales examined her body, he discovered that she had recently given birth, and things only got more complicated from there. It turns out that she had been trying to pull off a big surrogacy scam on three different couples by leading them to believe that she was pregnant with their baby. One couple was apparently very wealthy, there was another couple involved and it was clear that the whole scam had put a major emotional and financial strain on their marriage. The other couple was gay a couple (Two men), and being bisexual myself, I think it’s always nice to see LGBT characters on TV.

However, the gay couple is a part of one of the few things that bugged me about this episode, which I’ll get to in a moment. Once the team found out that the baby was with the wealthy couple that she had been scamming, they had to determine which couple the baby belonged to, meaning that they had to do a paternity test. This brings me to one of my only complaints that I have with this episode. The gay couple apparently didn’t know which one of them was supposed to be the father since they had apparently wanted the doctors to randomly choose which one of them would be the father. Personally, I think the whole idea of two men having a child together, but not wanting to know which one of them is the father is something that I feel is a bit cliché when it comes to TV these days. However, it didn’t bug me nearly as much here, because all of the other times that I’ve seen TV shows do this, they’ve been comedies, namely Glee and most recently Marry Me, that have both used this idea as the basis of a joke by having the child be white when one of the two possible biological fathers is African American. Thankfully, the writers didn’t try to work that joke into the episode, which is why it didn’t bother me nearly as much here. The whole issue of the baby’s paternity became even more complicated when the team found out that the woman had a boyfriend in the picture, and Raydor realized that he could possibly be the baby’s father.

Major Crimes: Casts Michael Weatherly in season 1-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Michael Weatherly will be guest-starring in a season 1 episode of The Closer's spinoff Major Crimes. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Weatherly's role:



The NCIS vet will appear in an early Season 1 episode as Arthur “Thorn” Woodson, a charming con artist who currently works as an ”intuitive life strategist” for a group of Israeli mob wives (all of whom he is bedding). Described as a “Peter Pan with an A.D.D. problem,” Thorn previously held down jobs as a hand model, a ventriloquist and a black jack dealer. His dream is to someday land his own show on Oprah Winfrey’s fledgling cable net OWN.

“Arvin Brown is directing [the episode] — he’s done many NCIS episodes,” Weatherly tweeted of the gig.

Major Crimes is set to premiere on Monday, Aug. 13 at 10/9c immediately following the series finale of The Closer.

Mark Pellegrino Previews The Closer Season 7 Episode 14, Being Human, Castle-TVLine

This Monday on The Closer‘s winter finale (TNT, 9/8c), Gavin Q. Baker III may decide that working pro bono for the LAPD isn’t worth any amount of courtroom infamy, when yet another twist in the “Shootin’ Newton” case puts him and Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson even more on the defensive. In this exclusive TVLine Q&A, Mark Pellegrino spoke about this latest wrinkle for his Closer counselor as well as previewed his most unlikely Being Human encore and his role in Castle‘s time-trippy episode.

TVLINE | I understand that in this week’s case, another murder related to the “Shootin’ Newton” case throws Gavin yet another curveball….
Indeed, indeed. It seems like Brenda is always throwing me curveballs, that something is always going on with her. [Laughs] She’s a high-maintenance client, I would say. She’s definitely got issues to contend with.

TVLINE | What’s the nature of this latest twist?
There’s a gang member who winds up dead, and he quite possibly is an informant to somebody.… I don’t know what I’m supposed to reveal and what I’m not to, though.

TVLINE | Does Gavin get fed up by this latest snag? Does Gavin ever get fed up?
Gavin does get fed up with Brenda from time to time because there’s always some crisis to stamp out, plus Goldman [the opposing counsel played by Curtis Armstrong] is such a bulldog intent on bringing down the LAPD, and Brenda in particular because he thinks she’s rogue. So [Brenda and I] have our spats, and the last you saw us together she was kind of snotty to me for some unknown reason, and I was kind of forced to work for free.



TVLINE | I loved that scene, how Pope told Gavin the way it was going to be….
Well, I hope I delivered a well-timed kick to his butt for putting me in my place [by blabbing that Fritz, not the LAPD, had covered Gavin's initial retainer].

TVLINE | Gavin is such a distinct, colorful guy, and there probably us no one quite like him on primetime. Was that all in the script, or was there anything that you brought to the characterization?
He was definitely written in a flamboyant fashion, and in an unapologetic fashion, and I did decide to take couple of real life characters in primetime TV — Carson Kressley and Tim Gunn — and kind of combine them. But you’re right, I don’t think that character exists in that world in any primetime show, and it’s pretty doggone great that they brought somebody in like that.

TVLINE | What’s it been like working with Kyra Sedgwick, Jon Tenney (who plays Fritz), JK Simmons (Pope)….?
They’re wonderful, and they really welcomed me in to their group. I think JK is a frickin’ genius; he’s so funny, and everything he does is so spot-on and interesting to watch. Jon was amazing, and though I didn’t get a chance to see him direct [a later episode], I remember him asking questions that were really, really great questions from an actor’s point-of-view. And Kyra’s just so soulful and fun; I really liked working with them all.

TVLINE | What can you say about your return to Syfy’s Being Human (Season 2 premieres Jan. 16), seeing as how you were decapitated and all?
I’ve been told not to say anything, so…. But I became really, really close everybody on that set, so that’s something that I hope becomes a consistent thing. Sam Witwer (who plays vampire Aidan) and I are really good friends and going back to work for them is like going to work for my brother. I’ve gotten close to them like I’ve never gotten close to any cast members before.



TVLINE | TVLine broke the news that you’re a part of Castle‘s upcoming “noir” episode. What’s that all about?
[Castle] gets a hold of a diary that was written in the ’40s, and he’s trying to solve a [modern day] crime through the information in it. And every time he reads it he flashes back to the ’40s, with the principal characters playing characters in the diary. I’m the only “stranger,” because I’m playing a gangster who owns this famous nightclub, a jazz club. Nathan [Fillion] was so good, Stana [Katic]‘s so good…. They’re both so easy to work with.

TVLINE | Did they do Stana right by the period glamour and everything?
Oh, my god, she was fantastic. She’s dressed to kill. As was I. I love being in those double-breasted suits, pinstripes, hair slicked back…. It’s definitely a great thing.

TVLINE | Do Nathan and Stana’s 1940s alter egos have the “angsty” sort of relationship that Castle and Beckett have in the present?
It kind of mimics that, yes.

TVLINE | The arcs you do on shows (including Supernatural, Lost) rarely hit double digits. Is that by design? Do you like dipping your toe in, creating someone memorable and then exiting stage left? Would you be open to a series regular gig?
Of course I’d love to be a series regular on a show. There’ve been times when I went in on something for a couple, maybe four episodes, and then they extended it further. Like, Dexter went longer than it was supposed to. I loved being on Being Human for 10 episodes, basically the whole [first] season. It’s a little disconcerting to come onto a cast that’s been together for five, six years, and kind of has their own way of working. You kind of have to feel your way around and get comfortable. It’s nice to be on from the beginning and develop the closeness and camaraderie that you see on other sets.

TVLINE | So you’ll be going out for pilot season?
Yes, indeed.

TVLINE | And Locke & Key, the pilot you did last spring for Fox – that’s 100-percent DOA?
I think it is, yeah…. I didn’t know how they were going to do it because I’ve read all of the graphic novels and it would have been massively expensive to do what they did [there]. I mean, there is some crazy stuff that goes on!

Veteran actress and two-time Tony winner Frances Sternhagen has been cast as Zeek’s (Craig T. Nelson) never-before-seen mother, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Is Castle gunning to make you grab for Kleenex? Does Community have an endgame? Will Astrid ever find herself twin-piqued? Read on for those answers, plus other teases from TV’s hottest shows.


Castle | No sooner did I hear that the screener for the next new episode was available did I lunge for the play button. As you may know, “Kill Shot” revolves around a sniper who is picking off “random” civilians — and as you can imagine, the case has a profound effect on Beckett, who found herself on the business end of a long-range rifle in the Season 3 finale. On Monday I’ll have a full-on Q&A with Stana Katic, but for now rest assured that she brings it, quick, often and heart-wrenchingly, as Kate’s memories are jostled anew. (Expect waterworks on both sides of your TV screen.) You’ll see a lot of her scar and her shrink (whom she hightails it to after one big breakdown). Jon Huertas also shines in the episode, as Esposito, a sniper himself, tried to help Beckett stand up to her demons. On the lighter side, Alexis’ smarts help dig up a clue about the killer, and you’ll hear of a “new man” in Kate’s life. His name is Roger and, she effuses, he has “the most incredible [spoiler]“!

The Closer | Another screener I cued up is this TNT hit’s “Season 7.33″ premiere (airing Nov. 28). In light of how the final season’s first run of episodes ended — with cocky Booger filing a federal lawsuit against Brenda & Co. — it’s no surprise that Raydor is riding everyone harder than ever. But is the captain satisfied with pulling “hall monitor” duty? Watch for an interesting twist (and then a twist on that twist) there. Turning to the new batch’s second, Christmas-themed episode, Pope has a scene that is made of epic win, and a visit from Buzz’s hottie sister (FlashForward‘s Christine Woods) has all of the MCD menfolk feeling most jolly.

Community | No one – not a single TVLine staffer included – wants to ponder a primetime slate devoid of this beloved NBC comedy. But if, in the worst-case scenario, the Greendale gang can’t eke out another renewal after returning from winter hiatus, rest assured that series boss Dan Harmon has a plan. “If we’re unsure enough [about our fate], you can count on me to wrap things up in a way that will satisfy those fans who have stuck with us for three years,” he told us months ago, before the current season started. “Even though it will be a horrible funeral, at least it will be a complete one… with a burial.” With that said, here are links to a “Save Community” Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Body of Proof | We pause here for a quick casting scoop: Hip-hop recording artist/sometime Justin Bieber collaborator Sean Kingston will guest-star on the ABC procedural around midseason, playing a cab driver named Marley.

Suburgatory | TVLine caught up with Jane Levy at a recent event, and she was more than happy to dish about upcoming episodes. For one, hottie-next-dooor “Ryan reconfesses his love to [Tessa], and she just doesn’t want to hear it,” the ingénue revealed. “It’s some juicy stuff.” But Levy’s most favorite episode to date arrives this Wednesday, when her new nabe marks Thanksgiving. “Everyone comes together and the dysfunction is at its highest point,” she previews. “It’s hilarious.”

Fringe | When we met up with Jasika Nicole on the Fox drama’s Vancouver set, we had to wonder aloud: Will our Astrid ever meet her At Universe doppelganger? Nicole smiled and confirmed nothing, but went on to share her own curiosity at such a face-off. “The two Olivias are very different, but these two women are fundamentally different, so I wonder what their common ground is?” she ventured. “I think this Astrid would be completely fascinated and want to hang out with the alternate Astrid. And I think the other alternate Astrid would just be completely oblivious.” Interesting fact: In her portrayal of AltAstrid, Nicole takes some cues from her real-life sister, who lives with Autism. “There are definitely some similarities that they have in terms of behavioral patterns,” she notes.

Covert Affairs | In my full Q&A with Chris Gorham, he hinted at changes coming down the pike for Auggie. But here’s one extra-titillating tidbit I left out. “As we get to the end of this season, Auggie is going to deal with something on a very personal level,” he shared. “He’s going to make a big choice that I think [viewers] might be nervous about once they get to it.” Gorham offered no other details – though one has to wonder if this twist somehow involves new girlfriend Parker, who’s due to join the Peace Corps at some point – but he did rave, “I’m very happy about how we handled it.”

Sons of Anarchy | Now that you’ve seen the latest episode, where Wendy’s visit led Tara to rebreak her already damaged hand, I can pass along Maggie Siff’s answer to the question: Could this be the start of a pattern of self-destructive behavior? Will the devastated doc lose it completely? “The thing that Kurt [Sutter] and I have talked about is how Tara can never become Gemma — the roots of who she is are really, really different,” she answered. “Tara has these two small children that she’s super-dedicated to, and what’s been very interesting in terms of these events going down is how much of a grip she’s been losing internally. So I think you will continue to see her struggle.”

Two and a Half Men is adding a new lady to the mix.

Mimi Rogers is set to appear in multiple episodes of the CBS staple, playing the mother of Ashton Kutcher’s Walden Schmidt, Deadline reports. Men‘s self-made millionaire apparently got his brains from his lookalike mom, who happens to be a noted primatologist.

Ready for more of today’s TV dish? Well…

• Looks like The Closer is getting spun off without Corey Reynolds. Deadline is reporting that the actor has turned down a spot on Major Crimes, the long-running TNT drama’s upcoming offshoot. In the meantime, Reynolds has signed a talent holding deal at NBC.

• Everwood alert! Treat Williams has landed a guest spot on an upcoming episode of Law & Order: SVU. Per TVGuide.com, the NBC procedural has cast the Against the Wall actor as a former quarterback caught with an underage prostitute.

• Hellcats alumna Ashely Tisdale will appear in the Valentine’s Day installment of Fox’s Raising Hope, playing Jimmy’s fake girlfriend, per EW.com.

• Jennie Garth is set to star in and executive-produce a half-hour comedy pilot for ABC Family, titled Village People. The 90210 alumna will play a single, career-driven woman who adopts a baby from a teen mom, whom she ends up “adopting” as well.

• Wilmer Valderrama (That 70′s Show) will guest-star on an episode of ABC’s freshman comedy Suburgatory, playing a new age spiritual (and sexual!) guru, TVGuide.com reports.

Not hearing of anything the works for Dan and Blair, and it quite honestly pains me to tell you that! But Chuck and Blair fans, there is some good news for you. Aside from what I've mentioned about Blair's feelings for Chuck being quite the issue with her fiance prince, I can also tell you that despite the photo above, which looks like a meet cute between the Chuckster and a new love interest, a source tells me this little gem of good news: Chuck does not have any sort of new love interest in the works. At least not early on in the season. Cause to celebrate, mayhaps?

Er, call this scoop Wemma-adjacent. Flashback time! Glee is looking for someone to play a young Emma (Jayma Mays). It'll probably be a quick flashback, because this Emma won't have any lines. Maybe we'll finally get some insight into why Emma is the way she is. Don't worry, Cory Monteith's cute mug isn't going anywhere! He's one-half of one of the most fan-obsessed couples on TV right now! But what's even better news is the fact that we hear he'll be getting lots of solo storylines…meaning stuff that has to do with being just Finn, and not half of Finchel.

Monica: Hey, any scoop on Lauren Graham on Parenthood? I'm slightly obsessed with her.
Get in line. Sources tell me that Lauren's character Sarah will be doing a very good deed in the coming season: Helping her ex Seth, aka John Corbett, find his way back to rehab. (Poor dude really just never got over Carrie! Oh wait, wrong show.) Corbett's back for multiple episodes and I'm hearing great things about the storyline. Word is the scenes with Lauren and John could be some of the best ever on the show.

When we chatted with the Awkward. star, she told us:"I would definitely be open to coming back for some sort of closure for Sam, absolutely. It would be wonderful to go back there because I kept in touch with everybody. I talked to Hilary [Burton] about a week ago." But has she been approached to return to Tree Hill? "I'm still waiting on my contract for Avatar 4," she jokes, "So we'll see."

Cathy: One Tree Hill's final season is going to be epic! Any scoop?
Now that Chad Michael Murray is coming back, season nine is indeed going to be epic. According to Tyler Hilton, creator Mark Schwahn is going all out. "One of the reasons why I am such a fan of this last season is because Mark said that last season he thought it might be the last season, so he ended it the way fans wanted it to end," he tells us. "This season he knows it is going to be the last season, and since he already kind of gave the fans their season last time, he said that he really wants to make this season what he wants. He said that since the show is done after this season, he has no one to impress, he can just do whatever he wants." Mark Schwahn writing without anyone holding him back? OTH's final season is going to be cray-cray!

Suzanne in Portland, Ore.: Modern Family? Can't wait for it to come back!
Get your chaps ready, because the season premiere is all about the Wild West. "The family went to a dude ranch and there are going to be a lot of surprises in that episode," Nolan Gould tells us. What kind of surprises? Well, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) wants to capture the memory of the dude ranch by posing with guns, and Phil (Ty Burrell) takes up the fine art of skeet shooting. We also hear there's going to be some truly authentic-looking cowboy gear involved.

wingster55: What major couple will be splitting on Parks and Recreation?
Not Andy and April. As far as we know, there are no current plans to split 'em up. So that's something?

Lance in Orlando, Fla.: Anything on Happy Endings? Particularly on my favorite non-couple: Max and Penny?
Remember when Max (Adam Pally) and Penny (Casey Wilson) were "double Snooki's" for Halloween? Prepare for another double costume in a big Halloween episode this season. Wilson wouldn't give us any hints on what the costumes entail, but she seemed borderline giddy over it. Can't wait!

haustonst: What can you tell me about Secret Circle that hasn't been told yet?
Hmm...How about that fans of the original book series (written by L.J. Smith) may see some familiar faces pop up in unexpected ways? "I think it's a really fun way to introduce characters, especially for people who love the book series," executive producer Andrew Miller tells us. "We'll definitely do that." Black John, perhaps? "We might incorporate a character like Black John," Miller teases. "He might be renamed."

secret_circle: Any Secret Circle goodies?
A key difference between TSC and Vampire Diaries? Cassie (Britt Robertson) isn't exactly a goody two-shoes like Elena (Nina Dobrev). Cassie falling in love with Adam (Thomas Dekker), even though she shouldn't, "brings her into these dark feelings in herself," Miller explains. "We start this journey with Cassie between good and evil inside herself that relates to her mom and dad."

Maureen: Will Alison Brie be back on Mad Men next season?

Seems very likely! Alison Brie coyly tells us: "I've heard that I may be able to get back over there and so that's good news. I'm excited that that's seeming to work out." So did she blab about Trudy Campbell's role on the award-winning drama? Nope. Brie remains tight-lipped: "I'm just terrified. I'm really not allowed to say anything else."

Kb_toyzz: Any hints on Degrassi? ;)
After Thursday's sure-to-be intense finale, fans can get their next Degrassi fix in October when TeenNick will air a one-hour Halloween special. What can fans expect from Mr. Eli Goldsworthy (Munro Chambers)? "That's like his New Year's," Munro teases. "He does New Year's on Halloween." Sounds like a party!

zindzijade: can you help ease some concerns for Brenda on The Closer? please? thank you!
Wish we could, but it sounds like Brenda is in for a rocky season. "This whole season is about this lawsuit and Brenda operating under this specter of this lawsuit that she is responsible for," Kyra Sedgwick tells us. "So I think that that takes its toll on her, but I don't know how [the show] will finally, finally end." But here's some silver lining: looks like Brenda and Fritz will not be on the fritz. (We love puns!) "Well, I think Brenda and Fritz stay together," Jon Tenney says. "I don't know what's going to happen with Fritz, that's all up in the air. But I would like to believe that Brenda and Fritz stay together." So would we, Jon.

Harrison: Can. Not. Wait. For The Vampire Diaries to return. Can you tell us what's up with Jeremy seeing the dead chicks? How long will they be on? And does this mean things are over with Bonnie?

Nothing like some "dead chicks" to really liven up the place, eh? I'm hearing some very good things about that storyline—It's gonna be twisty and turny and cool. Also hearing Malese Jow (Anna) and Kayla Ewell (Vicki) will be in about a handful of episodes (somewhere around six) and they will be recurring throughout the season. So you'll get some fun "dead chick" splashes there for a while, but they won't be around enough to muck things up with Bonnie. Win-win-win.

brandon120: Is there going to be paintball this year on Community?

We think there is always going to be a special place for paintball on Community but Yvette Nicole Brown tells us the first episodes of the season are less zombies and space shuttles and more "grounded." She dishes: "I think they are going to take some time now and find out why these people are friends...There've been quieter but more intensive adventures." Quiet intensive adventures you say? We think this calls for a Dungeons and Dragons redux! Oh, and speaking of "quieter" and "grounded," we also heard from our friend Joel McHale that there was a turtle on set last week. Sorry, forgot the major spoiler alert warning on that one! Is the whole season ruined?

Did The Closer's Gabriel Snitch on Brenda? Corey Reynolds Teases 'Grande Finale' Arc - TVLine

When last we tuned into TNT’s The Closer (Mondays at 9/8c), Raydor came to suspect that someone within the department had told the plaintiff in the “Shootin’ Newton” lawsuit of a very incriminating exchange between Brenda and Gabriel — the smoking gun, if you will. Since select few people knew that Brenda had rebuffed Gabriel’s suggestion that they stick around to postpone a rather inevitable gang murder, could it have been Gabriel himself, acting from a place of duty, who leaked the info?
TVLine spoke with Closer vet Corey Reynolds about this latest twist in what he calls the very beginning of the procedural’s “grand finale.”


TVLINE | It appears that we now have a mole hunt underway….
We do have a mole hunt. I believe we might have a leak.

TVLINE | The Closer is kind of due for one. It’s a crime drama, there’s a close-knit group of cops…. At some point a mole has to be sussed out.
That’s right, and one really interesting thing the writers are doing this year is you’re getting to see a more clear picture of how Brenda’s decision-making really has a tremendous impact on everyone else. We’ve all kind of been thrown into this [wrongful death lawsuit] mess, for various different associations… and we will see Brenda take an introspective look at what she did to make all of our lives more complicated. For seven seasons now, we’ve seen her make her decisions and push thinking in her direction, and the pieces fall where they lie. Now, because there’s a level of closeness that’s moved into the family realm when it comes to the squad, she’s starting to reevaluate her role in how it’s had an impact on our careers.

TVLINE | I want to say that Gabriel is above reproach, but if this leak stems from something he said to her privately…. I imagine all eyes will be on him.
Yeah, yeah. And to be honest, at this point we don’t know who the mole is. The creative staff is being very coy about where things are going. I mean, I have my suspicions, but it’s still up in the air.

TVLINE | So this will be going on for a number of episodes, and won’t be resolved in a week or two?
Oh, no, this isn’t going to be resolved in a week or two. This is going to be the grand finale. The maestro is tapping the music stand, the whole symphony just sat up in their seats, and we’re about to play this thing out, man. For those who have been following the show closely and have been paying attention to the “yellow brick road” we’ve been building on the way to see the Wizard here, you’re going to have a lot of things come back sand smack you in the face. I…. I’m so stuck between what I know and what I can divulge. [Laughs] What I know I can share is that Brenda’s decision-making is really going to be the focus of this final season.

TVLINE | Which I think is kind of cool, that it’s not the same ol’ same ol’ for the show’s final run. Instead, Brenda is facing this crucible for her swan song. It wraps up her arc — this is who she was, this is who she became…
… and this is the effect the city had on her. Ever since we began production on this show, we’ve seen what effect Brenda has had on Los Angeles. What we’re seeing now is also a lot of the impact Los Angeles has had on her. She’s not the same person she was when she came in.

TVLINE | But damn it, she gets the job done.
That’s right, and that’s going to be a very interesting dynamic for the viewers to watch play out. The best thing I can tell you is: “Expect the unexpected!”

TVLINE | Will Brenda or Raydor make a beeline for Gabriel, since he’s one of the few who knew what was said that day?
That would seem to be Stop A, but it’s almost like playing a game of Clue. Did the Colonel do it in the library with the candlestick? The writers have been very smart about breadcrumbs, and if you’ve been paying attention, they lead you to where things are going.

TVLINE | In this week’s episode, it looks like Brenda’s attorney will get in the face of the Major Crimes guys.
Yeah, he’s got to find out what we know and what type of group we are, and find out who the potential leak is, if there is a leak.

TVLINE | It’s interesting what Mark Pellegrino is doing with his character, Gavin Q. Baker. He’s a little affected.
He is a little affected. I think if you spend enough time out here in Los Angeles and you interact with enough people who have clout, power, money, prestige and reputation, you can see the effect Los Angeles has had on Gavin as well. He’s very affected, but he’s also very effective.




TVLINE | Throughout all of this, would you say Gabriel is the most protective of Brenda?
I would say so. If you go back to the pilot, instantly he saw something in her that was very admirable. That’s what has been the apex of their relationship. Despite disagreeing with her at times over some of her methods, he trusts her implicitly. He believes in her and in her desire to do the right thing. I think the thing he’s discovered from her the most is that there is a grey area. You sometimes have to bend the rules to get to where you need to go. But what he’s also discovered is that bending the rules has consequences.

TVLINE | Is it hard to field questions about The Closer‘s “final season!” when you must be like, “There is is much more ahead.” I mean, you’re going to be running episodes through next summer.
[Laughs] Yeah. And as much as I am sad to see this experience as is come to an end, I’m very grateful for everything that we’ve been able to do here. This was the first pilot I ever booked, so to have it be something that’s been such a defining chapter of my life, professionally and personally, is a gift. The most important thing to all of us right now is, “How can we bring this ship into port in a way that is going to be up to the standards of the people who have stood by us all these years?” I called [series creator] James Duff over the weekend and had a conversation about some of the threads I had seen on message boards, and the guy is a mini genius. What he is doing is going to really blow the minds of everyone watching this show. I have my desire to be a show creator at some point in my career, and what he has done with this arc is very impressive. He is the first one to say, “I can’t take all the credit,” and he won’t, but everything starts from somewhere, and for us, that somewhere is with James. How he has set things up… seriously, you guys are going to be blown away.

TVLINE | Give us one last tease about what’s ahead for Gabriel.
The best little tidbit I can give about Gabriel is that he may not be the person we think he is.
