One of the best things in the premiere is Barry decides that he wants to work alone because he doesn’t want to risk anyone else’s lives, and Iris is really the one who gets the band back together again. Yes, particularly when it comes to the early years. “We have a whole series of flashbacks over the first chapter that tell the story of the Originals’ first year as vampires before the word ‘vampire’ had even been assigned to them, and them learning what they were capable of, where they could fit in, how they could adopt the manners of a rich and cultured family even though they were tattered Vikings on the run,” says executive producer Julie Plec. “Within those flashbacks, we see the origin story of each of The Trinity, and we understand why The Trinity themselves might have reason to be a little pissed off at our hero family.”

The show plans to explore that further. The bad news? We asked executive producer K.J. Steinberg which is the biggest risk to the odd-couple roommates’ potential romance — the fact that Marc never told April about his alcohol relapse or the fact that his sister was the woman for whom April’s first husband feigned his death to start a new life in Florida? “The secret lapse would definitely be more of a threat,” Steinberg says without hesitation. “Miranda, you know, isn’t really family [to April], so that hasn’t been an issue for either of them.” Marc’s battle with the bottle, however, will play into the final two installments of Season 3 — so don’t expect everything will be coming up glue sticks-and-cardboard for the duo.

Ausiello: Not much is happening — at least romantically — between them at the start of the season, since Erin is still spiraling from last May’s cliffhanger. Jay is “just worried about her surviving,” executive producer Matt Olmstead tells TVLine. “Then once she gets her feet [back] under her, we may have the romance kick back in.” May?! Clarifies Olmstead: “I’m pretty sure it’s going to kick back in.”

Question: In light of Nadia’s death on Chicago PD, it seems like the perfect time for Erin and Kelly on Chicago Fire to reconnect and bond, especially as friends. It was a great bridge between the two shows as they had such great chemistry. Is there any chance of that? —Alice
Ausiello: A reunion is highly unlikely considering Kelly is getting a new love interest (played by Continuum‘s Rachel Nichols). After getting demoted from his lieutenant position, the firefighter “has to go to a management trainee [program],” executive producer Matt Olmstead previews. “There he meets [Nichols’ character]…who is also a troubled manager at her law firm. They’re kindred spirits who meet, essentially, in detention, and there’s a romance there that turns into a fairly large complication going forward.”

First Time (Book #1 in the By The Numbers series): This book is seriously the best romance novel that I’ve read in years (My thoughts on “Ian’s Story” by Abigail Barnette)

At the risk of starting this review off on a bit of a tangent, if you’ve read my review of the fourth book in Emma Chase’s Tangled series, Tied (My thoughts on Tied), it should be pretty clear that I found that book to be rather disappointing. One thing that I didn’t talk about in my review for Tied is the fact that while I was reading it and found myself thinking about how it was a rather disappointing way to end the series, I also found myself thinking a lot about what I personally would like to see in a romance novel as I was reading Tied. I thought about discussing my thoughts on what I personally would like to see in a romance novel in that review, but I ultimately decided not to mention that because I felt like my review for Tied was already getting to be kind of long, and I wasn’t entirely sure how to work the subject into that review without completely derailing that review. However, I think it’s very important that I share my wish list for things that I’d like to see in a romance novel in this review, because it really relates to my thoughts on “Ian’s Story” for the book First Time by Abigail Barnette. The things that I found myself wanting to see in a romance novel were as followed:

1. I wanted the guy to be more average looking, while still being an attractive man, instead of being a guy who’s beyond gorgeous and could easily get a job as a model for men’s underwear.

2. I wanted the guy to have a relatively successful career, but at the same time not be a millionaire or a billionaire like so many guys in romance novels tend to be, based on my own experience with reading books in the romance genre.

3. Instead of having the guy be an uber confident man who can flirt and charm women with ease, I wanted the guy to be somewhat insecure and perhaps a little awkward around women at times, without coming across as being a creepy weirdo.

4. I wanted the woman in the story to be smart, strong and confident, but still have a vulnerable side, rather than be simply being an incredibly naive idiot and a total doormat like Ana Steele from the Fifty Shades books is.

The reason why I’m mentioning my personal wish list for things that I’d like to see in a romance novel is because the writing for “Ian’s Story” for First Time really made me feel like Abigail Barnette somehow got ahold of my wish list for a romance novel when she wrote “Ian’s Story”, and that’s huge part of why I love “Ian’s Story” so much. I don’t know how the timeline for when I read and reviewed Tied compares to the timeframe in which she wrote First Time, but I think it’s safe to say that she had to have at least started writing it, if she hadn’t already finished the book for the most part by the time I read Tied. There’s also the fact that I never wrote down any of the things that I’d like to see in a romance novel, so in order for her to have gotten access to my wish list, she most likely would have had to have gotten access to some form of time travel, as well as the ability to read people’s minds or the assistance of someone who could read people’s minds in order to get my personal wish list for a romance novel.

As I previously mentioned, the show picks up roughly six months after their exit and they’ve both moved on with their lives. “Booth is teaching at Quantico, so he’s left the old life behind,” new showrunner Michael Peterson tells me.  “Besides just giving birth to a child, Brennan never has trouble filling up her time. She’s written books, she’s done multiple projects. She’s more in between than Booth. She’s diversified herself into many projects, so she hasn’t quite landed on the one.”

“There could be potential for more of that [relationship] to play out” in Season 3B, David Lambert says. “But at this point, I feel like it’s sort of done.” After all, “The moms tried to nip the whole thing in the bud and end it before it really begins,” the actor points out. “A.J. also has his own things to worry about with his brother and his living situation.”
